LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federally funded program administered by each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico that helps low-income households with home heating and cooling costs. Benefits may cover heating bills, summer cooling assistance, emergency energy crisis help, and weatherization to improve home energy efficiency. Eligibility and benefit amounts vary by state, but programs generally serve households with incomes at or below 60 percent of the state median income or 150 percent of the federal poverty level, whichever is higher. To apply, contact your state agency directly using the phone number or website on this page, or visit energyhelp.us. LIHEAP never charges a fee. Federal law and state program rules prohibit charging applicants to apply or to receive benefits. Anyone asking for a payment or fee to apply for LIHEAP is a scammer. Report suspected fraud to the HHS Office of Community Services or your state agency.
